 CHANCE! 2nd single

Beware of CAPS LOCK! Ah yes, that's pretty random but in case you haven't realise this, all the 3 (+1) tracks in this single are all in upper case ie. CHANCE!, PRIME, SHINE. CHANCE! made it to #5 on the Oricon #200 weekly but it didn't manage to stay there for long. I wouldn't be surprised because what is worth buying for this single is probably only the Aside. No, the Bsides are not crappy but they are just nowhere comparable to the Aside, that people simply forget about the other 2 tracks.

Tracklisting wise, I would actually prefer if PRIME is put on the last track instead because I personally feel the ending for SHINE is not suitable to end of the whole single. In fact, the introduction for SHINE is enough to make you want to skip the song (even though it's really good) after listening to PRIME. Also, SHINE is a contrary of CHANCE! and therefore, I don't like the feel this whole single give me.

The illustrations for the CD jacket also are not as good compared to their other singles. The promotional picture of CHANCE! that is also printed in the booklet kind of remind you of some kind of advertisement, (hint: a milk product) and Shintarou is not helping by wearing green.

Rating: 7.75/10
Though SHINE and PRIME are actually good when you listen to them individually, CHANCE! is simply too good that it mask the presence of the other 2 songs. Even the beat in PRIME won't work against CHANCE!.

CHANCE!

The lyrics. An inspirational song telling us not to give and to make good use of time because it's precious. As the word Chance suggest, probability and possibly of that certain time and opportunity is not always available for us. Time is precious, do not waste it, take that chance and never look back. *Laughs* but they (UVERworld) seem kind of arrogant at the bridge part ne? "Try comparing it to the other music around. The value is obviously full-scale", kind of saying that their music is way better than the rest. While many fans will say "OBVIOUSLY!", having listen to a few rock bands make me think that UVERworld still has more to learn. That line actually surprised me. (Unless it's some translation error, which I doubt so).

The feeling that this song gave me. The opening is a very good start, which attracts people to sing along. The verses were light hearted, giving a refreshing feeling and you can feel the energy it radiates. The chorus is quite like the verses, which flows very nicely with each other. Then the bridge, it was not that bad. Can feel the difference, more energetic, more heavy rock. Kind of showing how can successfully UVERworld can incorporate hard and soft rock together without making it sound horrible.

CHANCE! was the first song that got me hooked on to UVERworld, not D-tecnoLife. The song first started with a rap which gives the song a nice start. The lyrics here isn't related to the meaning behind the song. Takuya's English pronunciation is unfortunately pretty bad because almost everybody I know and had listened to CHANCE! got the lyrics wrong. Then again, this part is just to get you into the mood.

The introduction then follows where Takuya's programming comes in handy. The digital piano sound at the background is what makes it stand out.

Because CHANCE! is a pretty repetitive song due to the emphasis on the chorus, UVERworld made sure that their two verses are different from each other. This is probably why many people are able to continue listening to this song for hours without getting tired of it.

Overall, the instruments are excellent. Shintarou's parts, though not obvious are probably one of the more important few in this song because this song honestly sounds terrible without his drums.

The lyrics is obviously emphasised on the chorus because that's where the inspirational phrases come in and catchy tunes are being used. This might also explain why many parts take up the form of rap so as not to mask the chorus. Like Shinya have said, CHANCE! is an inspirational song which can really relight your fighting spirit. I, myself am debted to UVERworld because CHANCE! is what pushed me to let go of my past mistakes and move forward.

Excellent! 10/10. Try listening to this when you are down, I believe it can lighten up your mood. Ah... But when you just lost an opportunity or chance, then perhaps not...

Prime

PRIME isn't exactly my favourite song because it is just not my cup of tea. You shouldn't listen to this song when you are in a rush or when you are angry. This song is nowhere near soothing and listening to the rhythm is like adding fuel to fire. The abrupt rests in between parts can make your heart leap.

Generally however, PRIME can be enjoyable when you play it in a noisy place. When you are in a rebel state, this song might actually work for you. Just sceam along with Takuya and the rest of the members.

If you watch UVERworld's lives, PRIME is definitely one song that is meant for live performances and not really for you to listen when you are alone.

As of a final rating, I would give this song a 6.75/10. Unless I have too much free time on hand, I would usually skip this song because I feel really queasy whenever I listen to this song. Maybe 6.75 is a pretty bad rating but then again, not many are fond of this song.

SHINE

1. The lyrics. Contrary to the title, it's somewhat a dark song. The intial lyrics is pretty much about how life sucks, but later on it mention about taking the step out of the darkness and grabbing onto that light of hope? (SHI NE or SHINE? Haha)

2. The feeling that this song gave me. Initially, the only thing I understand was "It's sad to say goodbye to you" and so I had the impression that it's a love song, probably about parting with the lover or something. It managed conveyed the angst, hatred(?), depressing parts (at least I know it's not a happy song), but I had a hard time trying to figure out what kind of song it was (until I saw the lyrics).

3. A 7/10. Nice to listen to occasionally, but not played for hours. Both loud and soft, negative and positive all combined into one. On the whole, I think it came out well enough, but the ending of the song abit off.
